5-Day Murchison Falls Savanna Birding Itinerary

Day 1 Birding Transfer North via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary & Kaniyo Pabidi Forest

Your safari begins with a drive north from Kampala/Entebbe alongside an expert Aamam Safaris birding guide. Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for on-foot rhino tracking while scanning the woodland for the White-crested Turaco, Bruce’s Green Pigeon, and various barbets. Continue into Murchison Falls National Park through Kaniyo Pabidi Forest, keeping an eye out for forest specialties such as the Puvel’s Illadopsis and Chocolate-backed Kingfisher before checking into your lodge.

Day 2 Albert Nile Delta Boat Cruise for Shoebill Tracking & Buligi Savanna Birding

Embark on an early morning private boat cruise down the Victoria Nile toward the Albert Nile Delta. This wetland system is premier habitat for the prehistoric Shoebill Stork, Saddle-billed Stork, Goliath Heron, and African Skimmer. In the afternoon, explore the Buligi savanna game tracks to spot large predators alongside iconic avian species such as the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Denham’s Bustard, and Secretary Bird.

Day 3 Morning Wilderness Birding Walk, Top of the Falls Hike & Evening Nightjar Spotting

Join an armed UWA ranger for an early morning foot safari in selected riverine forest paths to look for smaller passerines, warblers, and flycatchers. In the afternoon, hike to the top of Murchison Falls to witness the dramatic Nile compression. As dusk falls, we head out for a specialized night drive focus to spot Pennant-winged and Standard-winged Nightjars, as well as various owl species.

Day 4 Intensive Savanna Sector Birding, Photography Focus & Red-throated Bee-eater Cliffs

Dedicate today to intensive tracking and photography across alternative game loops. We take a targeted boat launch trip to the massive sandbanks along the river to observe and photograph a spectacular breeding colony of hundreds of colorful Red-throated Bee-eaters nesting in the cliff faces. Scan the skies for majestic raptors including the Martial Eagle, Bateleur, and Fish Eagle.

Day 5 Early Morning Bush Walk & Birding En Route Return Transfer to Entebbe

Enjoy a short morning birding walk around the lodge vicinity to check off remaining species. We then begin our return road journey back toward central Uganda. Keep your binoculars ready for roadside raptors and savanna birds during our exit transit. Pause for a fresh local lunch en route, arriving at Entebbe International Airport or Kampala in the late afternoon for your flight departure.
